THIS WEEKS INTEL
There's a difference between looking professional and looking over-produced. A lot of DJs are aiming for the first and landing on the second. The big cinematic edits, the videos that look like a producer made them. It all looks the part, and it's getting buried.
The accounts pulling real numbers are doing the opposite. The content still looks good. It's just not staged. Honest, talking-to-the-camera stuff that feels like you, not a film crew.
Here's the breakdown. What's working, what's dead, and where to put your energy this week.
What's working
Talking to the camera. Phone in your hand, not on a tripod. Talk to one person, like you're on FaceTime to a mate. Not "hey guys." A 40 second story about a track, a gig, why a certain record still goes off on a Friday. It's harder than it looks, because you have to say it without waffling. A trick to find the tone: actually FaceTime a friend and screen record it, or talk it out to ChatGPT voice first.
Putting your knowledge in a format. This is the one people miss, so here it is properly. You already know loads about music. The trick is the shape you pour it into. Instead of just chatting about tunes, turn it into a ranking, a tier list, or a bracket. "My top five closers." "Summer anthems, S tier down to never again." "Two tracks head to head, you vote." The format does the work for you, because it sets up a question people want answered and gets them arguing in the comments. Same knowledge you already have, just packaged so people stick around and react.
Series. The big one for 2026. Pick one thing and repeat it. Review one track a day until you hit a follower goal. Build something one piece at a time for every new follower. People come back for the next one.
Carousels over single photos. Even two slides beats one image. Slide two gets shown in the feed a second time, like a fresh thumbnail, so the post gets two bites instead of one.
Trial reels for testing hooks. One rule people get wrong. When one works, don't hit upgrade. It reposts as days old and dies. Duplicate it and post fresh instead.
Reposting your own reels every 60 to 90 days. It's allowed. Your content, your call. Give each reel up to three swings before you shelve it.
DM automation. "Comment GIGS and I'll send you the playlist." It's normal now, the way a thumbnail is normal on YouTube. ManyChat is the safe option that Meta is fine with.
Stories. Where people decide they actually like you. And the best place to softly mention you've got a date free.
What's dead
The 7 second trending sound, random clips, and a "read the caption" line. That was a trick to game watch time. It's done.
The over-produced, scripted talking head. The one that looks like a crew filmed it and reads like a robot wrote it.
A single photo with a caption. Use a carousel nearly every time.
Going Live to grow. It only reaches people who already follow you. Fine for your community, no use for new reach.
The repost button for other people's content. Does almost nothing, because it starts no conversation.
Where to put your energy
Forget the long list. Four things matter.
Get DMs going. Shares put you in front of people who don't follow you yet. Likes only reach the ones who already do. So make stuff people want to send to a mate, and put a comment-to-DM hook on every post worth it. DM conversations are the thing Instagram rewards above everything else.
Stop over-producing, start talking. One person, one camera. It still needs to look good, it just doesn't need a crew. The time between having an idea and posting it should be minutes, not days.
Pick one series and stick with it. Not five ideas. One, repeated, until people expect it.
Batch your posts. Don't post until you've got at least seven days lined up. The burnout comes from agonising over each post, not from posting a lot. More posts, more growth.
You're not losing bookings because you're not good enough. You're losing them because the people who'd book you don't know you exist. Sort the visibility out and the rest follows.
One more thing before you go.
Everything above only works if the foundation is right. The talking, the series, the formats, none of it lands if your brand isn't saying the right thing to the people who'd book you. Most DJs have never checked.
