THIS WEEKS INTEL

Morning.

Every DJ I know is all in on Reels on Instagram. That's how strangers find you, so it makes sense. But Metricool which is the social media scheduling tool I use in my business, looked at 24 million Instagram posts this year and carousels came out ahead of Reels on nearly every engagement metric. Carousels are also the format not everyone bothers with.

PAUL'S TAKE

Reels feel like performing. Carousels feel like a lot of hardwork. That's the real reason DJs skip them. Think about what happens after someone watches your clip. They tap your name, they land on your page, and they give you about ninety seconds. A wall of Reels asks them to keep watching. A carousel asks them to read, and reading is where it helps somebody get to know you a bit better.

Getting reach and being remembered are two different jobs. Most DJ pages only do the first one.

WHAT CHANGED, AND WHAT TO DO

Across 24 million posts, carousels pulled higher engagement, saves and comments than Reels, while making up a small share of what creators actually publish. Do this today. Post one carousel this week. Nine slides.

Slide 2 opens a question you don't answer yet. Slide 9 answers it. First line of the caption is your search line, written in plain English. One or two tags, no more. Ask for a comment rather than a save. Comments roughly triple when you ask for them.

Post between 7 and 9pm. About 70% of your views land in the first three days, so give it a proper start.

Carousel: 5 things a promoter checks on your Instagram before they message you

Slide 1: 5 things a promoter checks before they message you
Slide 2: Number 3 is where most DJs lose the booking
Slide 3: Your bio. Can they tell what you play in two seconds?
Slide 4: Your last three posts. Are you a DJ, or a repost account?
Slide 5: Footage of you actually playing. Not a flyer. You.
Slide 6: Crowd reaction. One shot of a full floor beats any line in your bio.
Slide 7: Whether anybody else vouches for you. Tags and shares from club pages.
Slide 8: Whether you're easy to contact. An email in the bio, or nothing.
Slide 9: Number 3 is the one. Most DJs have no decent footage of themselves behind the decks. Fix that at your next gig.

Caption first line: what promoters look for on a DJ's Instagram before booking them.

ONE LAST THING

If you want to know whether your opening line is strong enough before you post, run it through my new Discovery Engine. It scores your hook and rewrites it.

NEW YOUTUBE VIDEO

This is the system I built to work out why some posts go viral and most DJs never get seen. You show up, you post, you put the effort in, and the bookings still don't come. You get the odd spike, then it stalls. I've spent over a decade growing brands online and reaching millions of people, and I found that getting discovered follows a structure you can learn. In this video I break down the 5S Framework, the five signals that show up in content that actually gets found: Surfable, Story, Hook, Shareability and Saveability. I explain what each one does and why your posts stall when one of them is missing. Then I show you DiscoveryOS, the tool I built so you can score your own content against all five before you hit post. Drop in an idea or a draft, and the Discovery Engine tells you what's holding it back and how to fix it.

Everyone's making their artwork in ChatGPT now, and you can tell. Line the flyers up and it looks like one person made all of them. I've spent 37 years in the DJing world and I've moved from just playing to helping DJs build a brand, so I look at flyers differently these days. Here's what's actually going on,...

✉️ Welcome to the BPM Newsletter Business, Performance, Marketing insights for DJs and creative entrepreneurs THIS WEEKS INTEL Instagram just published what it wants from a caption. Most DJ accounts are ignoring all of it. Most DJs write the caption last. You upload the set, tag the venue, add a quick line on top, and share. Instagram has just published its own guidance on captions, and it treats them as central to how a post performs. In its words, the caption tells the search system what...

✉️ Welcome to the BPM Newsletter Business, Performance, Marketing insights for DJs and creative entrepreneurs THIS WEEKS INTEL For a lot of DJs, summer ending feels like the season winding down. The gigs thin out, the festival posts stop, and everyone goes a bit quiet. The booking calendar however says the opposite. The back half of the year is one of the busiest stretches there is, and a big chunk of it lands midweek, which frees up your weekends for other club gigs. Corporate party season...
