Most DJs have the talent. They just didn't have a system.

THIS WEEKS INTEL

I've been DJing since 1988. For most of that time I believed the same thing every DJ believes: if you're good enough, the bookings will come.

They don't. Not automatically. Not reliably. Not anymore.

I know DJs who have been playing since before some of you were born. Technically exceptional. Decades of experience. Sitting at home waiting for their phone to ring.

And I know DJs who are three years in, average behind the decks by comparison, who are turning down gigs because they're too busy.

That gap has nothing to do with talent.

Here's what I've been seeing after working with DJs on their brands for the last few years.

Most DJs have never told their story. Not properly. They post their gigs. They share their mixes. They tag the venue. But they never talk about who they are, why they started, what music means to them, and what their journey actually looked like. That's the gap. And it's costing them.

Every DJ has a story that nobody else has. That story is the one thing that can't be copied, can't be undercut, and can't be replicated by the next DJ who underquotes you on a booking enquiry.

Your story isn't just content. It's the thing that turns casual followers into genuine fans. The DJs who are too busy to take every gig aren't necessarily the best in the room. They're just the ones who've made themselves impossible to overlook.

You don't need to worry about other DJs taking your spot. No one else can tell your story. The question is whether you're telling it at all.

Let me explain that:

I released a new mix last week. Nothing unusual there.

But this one did something different. In the first few hours it got three times more views than anything I've put out before.

I didn't change the music. I didn't run ads. I didn't crack some new platform trick.

I just told the story behind it.

The mix is called Back to 95. And instead of posting "new mix out now" like I normally would, I talked about why 1995 mattered to me. Where I was. What that music meant. I told the story about my sister handing me a cassette and I had to buy a tape player on amazon to actually listen too it.

That's it. Same content. Different approach.

People don't just want to hear your work. They want to know why it exists.

Your profile is working against you

Someone lands on your Instagram, If your profile doesn't immediately tell them what you play, where you've played, and why you're worth a second look, they close the tab. They don't message you.

I've seen DJs with ten years of experience and a profile that tells you absolutely nothing. No bio that means anything. No pinned content. No clear reason to stay.

What it means for you: your profile is the first impression you never get to make in person.

Posting without a plan is just noise

Look at most DJ profiles and you'll see the same thing. Flyer. Flyer. Clip of them behind the decks. Flyer. Repost of someone else's mix. Another flyer.

Nobody is following you to see your flyers. Flyers are best placed in your stories with one pinned post at the top of your page showing all your upcoming gigs in one place.

Flyers aren't content. They're announcements. There's a difference. One builds an audience. The other talks to people who are already in the room.

The DJs who are growing are the ones showing what happens between the gigs. The crate digging. The studio sessions. The reason they fell in love with a particular record. The story behind the set. That's what people follow. That's what people share.

What it means for you: every flyer you post instead of a real piece of content is a missed opportunity to give someone a reason to care about you. No-one follows a notice board, and if all you post is flyers thats what you are.

The problem was never the talent

DJs don't have a talent problem. They have a distribution problem.

The ones getting booked figured out how to make their talent visible. They told their story. They built a profile that does the work when they're not in the room. They showed up consistently until the right people took notice.

The ones still waiting are just as good. Sometimes better. They just never got shown how.

That's the gap my Amplify programme is built to close.

Four video modules covering brand building, the tools professionals use, profile optimisation, and content strategy. Plus a 30-day content plan built specifically for you — your sound, your story, your audience.

Not a template. A real plan.

€150. Lifetime access. No monthly fees.

If you've been posting and getting nothing back, or you haven't started because you don't know where to begin, this is where to begin.

just spent 4 days in Estepona, Spain with two DJs. One had almost nothing on his profile. The other was posting every single day. And they both had exactly the same problem. Most DJs have a distribution problem, not a talent problem. And until you fix that, no amount of skill will get you booked. In this video I break down what those 4 days taught me, the profile mistakes that are losing you bookings you never even knew were on the table, why posting every day can actually make things worse, and three simple tools that changed everything for both DJs at the retreat. What's covered:

  • Why your profile is your first audition (and what promoters see when they Google you)
  • The difference between planting seeds and scattering noise
  • The microphone, the teleprompter app, and the crop sizes that make you look pro
  • Why Karen's mindset sessions were just as important as the content work

✉️ Welcome to the BPM Newsletter Business, Performance, Marketing insights for DJs and creative entrepreneurs DJOS OFFICIAL LAUNCH I've been DJing 37 years. I've been running a social media agency for the last 5 and a half years. For most of those 37 years I did what nearly every DJ does. Played some great gigs then just hoped the phone would ring. I had no system in place whatsoever. The agency years changed how I saw everything. I started auditing DJ brands properly, and the same thing came...

✉️ Welcome to the BPM Newsletter Business, Performance, Marketing insights for DJs and creative entrepreneurs THIS WEEKS INTEL Morning. Every DJ I know is all in on Reels on Instagram. That's how strangers find you, so it makes sense. But Metricool which is the social media scheduling tool I use in my business, looked at 24 million Instagram posts this year and carousels came out ahead of Reels on nearly every engagement metric. Carousels are also the format not everyone bothers with. PAUL'S...

✉️ Welcome to the BPM Newsletter Business, Performance, Marketing insights for DJs and creative entrepreneurs THIS WEEKS INTEL I've been watching the same thing happen for years. There's a DJ with real skill. Great record knowledge, years in the game, can genuinely play. And they're stood in a half-empty room. Then there's someone down the road, nowhere near the same level, selling the place out. Most people look at that and call it unfair. I don't. Because when you actually look at it, it...
