THIS WEEKS INTEL
DJs, are your social media posts actually getting you booked?
Here’s a question I want you to think about this week.
You’re posting on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. But is any of it actually helping your DJ career?
I see DJs spending hours creating Reels, uploading clips from gigs, sharing flyers and trying to keep up with the latest social media trends.
And I completely understand it. I’ve been DJing since 1988, and the promotional side of this industry has changed beyond recognition.
But here’s something I’ve learned.
Being busy on social media isn’t the same as building your DJ career.
A video getting 10,000 views might feel fantastic. But if nobody remembers your name, listens to your mixes or considers booking you, what has it really achieved?
Let’s look at how we can change that.
- Stop measuring success by likes alone
When you post something, don’t just look at the number of likes.
Ask yourself what happened next.
Reach: Are you getting discovered by people who don’t already follow you?
Shares: Are people enjoying your content enough to send it to someone else?
Profile visits: Are viewers interested enough to find out who you are?
New followers: Are you attracting people who genuinely enjoy your style of music?
Mix listens and booking enquiries: Is your content encouraging people to take the next step?
A Reel with 2,000 views that brings you a booking enquiry could be worth considerably more than one with 50,000 views that achieves nothing else.
The important thing is understanding what you’re trying to achieve with each post.
Your content needs to do different jobs
One of the biggest mistakes I see DJs making is posting the same type of content repeatedly.
Usually, it’s another gig flyer.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with promoting your gigs. But if that’s all people see, you’re missing opportunities to build a connection.
I’d encourage you to think about four types of content:
DISCOVERY — Help new people find you.
Short DJ clips, music recommendations, interesting stories about house music and entertaining moments.
CONNECTION — Give people a reason to follow you.
Share your musical influences, your journey, behind-the-scenes moments and what makes you different.
CREDIBILITY — Show people why they should book you.
Live footage, crowd reactions, testimonials, professional photographs and highlights from previous events.
CONVERSION — Make it easy to take the next step.
Share your mixes, upcoming appearances, press kit and booking information.
You don’t need to post every day.
You need to post with purpose.
Try my 15-minute DJ Instagram audit
Here’s a simple exercise for this week.
Open Instagram Insights and look at your last 30 days.
Find your three best-performing posts.
Now ask yourself:
What was the subject of each post?
Was it a Reel, carousel or photograph?
Did it reach people who weren’t following you?
Did it generate profile visits, shares or new followers?
What could you create next that builds on what worked?
Don’t just copy the most successful post.
Try to understand why people connected with it.
Maybe it was a particular track. Maybe it was a story about your DJ journey. Maybe people enjoyed seeing you perform.
Those patterns can tell you a lot about what your audience wants.
One thing I’d change on your profile today
Imagine a promoter discovers your latest Reel.
They enjoy the music and click through to your Instagram profile.
Within a few seconds, can they work out:
What kind of DJ you are?
Where you’re based?
What experience you have?
Where they can hear your mixes?
How they can book you?
If the answer is no, you could be missing opportunities.
Your social media profile shouldn’t just look good.
It should make it easy for the right people to discover, remember and contact you.
My final thought
You don’t need to chase every algorithm update or jump on every trend.
And you certainly don’t need to spend your entire life creating content.
You need a clear identity, a consistent message and a better understanding of what works for your audience.
So here’s my challenge for this week:
Before creating another five posts, spend 15 minutes understanding your previous five.
You might discover that the content you should be creating next is already staring you in the face.
Until next week,
