THIS WEEKS INTEL

Being good at what you do isn't enough anymore

I've been DJing since 1988.

And over those 37 years, I've seen some incredible DJs struggle to get regular work.

They know their music, they can read a room and they're more than capable of doing the job. The problem is, hardly anyone outside their immediate circle knows who they are.

I've been thinking about this a lot recently because the same thing happens in business.

You can be brilliant at what you do, but if the right people don't know about you, you're making life much harder for yourself.

And this is where I think a lot of people get social media wrong. We spend too much time worrying about what to post next. Should I make a Reel? Should I post a carousel? How often should I post? What does the algorithm want this week? Instead, I'd start with a much simpler question:

What do I want to be known for?

If you're a DJ who wants more bookings, what do you want a promoter to think when your name comes up?

If you run a business, what do you want somebody to immediately associate with your name?

That's what your content should be reinforcing. Take a look at your own profile today and then look at your last nine posts. If somebody discovered you for the first time, would they have a clear idea what you're about?

If the answer is no, don't worry about posting more.

Get clearer first.

One of the things I'm becoming more convinced about is that social media works much better when you stop treating it as a daily content machine and start treating it as a way of building what you're known for.

So here's something worth thinking about this week:

I want people to know me as the person who __________.

Fill in that blank.

Then ask yourself whether the content you're putting out backs it up.

Paul

P.S. If you want to, hit reply and send me your answer. I'd be interested to see what you want to be known for.

Everyone's making their artwork in ChatGPT now, and you can tell. Line the flyers up and it looks like one person made all of them. I've spent 37 years in the DJing world and I've moved from just playing to helping DJs build a brand, so I look at flyers differently these days. Here's what's actually going on,...

✉️ Welcome to the BPM Newsletter Business, Performance, Marketing insights for DJs and creative entrepreneurs THIS WEEKS INTEL Instagram just published what it wants from a caption. Most DJ accounts are ignoring all of it. Most DJs write the caption last. You upload the set, tag the venue, add a quick line on top, and share. Instagram has just published its own guidance on captions, and it treats them as central to how a post performs. In its words, the caption tells the search system what...

✉️ Welcome to the BPM Newsletter Business, Performance, Marketing insights for DJs and creative entrepreneurs THIS WEEKS INTEL For a lot of DJs, summer ending feels like the season winding down. The gigs thin out, the festival posts stop, and everyone goes a bit quiet. The booking calendar however says the opposite. The back half of the year is one of the busiest stretches there is, and a big chunk of it lands midweek, which frees up your weekends for other club gigs. Corporate party season...
